Why teams compare Atatus and groundcover

groundcover keeps your data in your cloud. That also puts its backend on your cloud bill.

groundcover traces Kubernetes services with an eBPF sensor and keeps every signal in a Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC) backend inside your VPC. That backend, including its ClickHouse database, runs on compute and storage in your own cloud account. groundcover manages it, but your cloud provider bills you for it on top of the per-host fee. The sensor also needs eBPF-enabled Linux, and eBPF traces stop at the protocol level: you see the request and the query, not the function that made them. Atatus is hosted for you, instruments your code with language agents or OpenTelemetry, and runs on Windows and macOS hosts as well as Linux and Kubernetes.

01 — Operations

Nothing to size, scale or back up

Atatus runs the storage and query backend for you. There is no database in your account to size for traffic peaks, plan high availability for, or pay your cloud provider for. If data must stay on your own servers, the Atatus on-premises edition runs inside your network.

02 — Depth

See inside your code, not just the request

Atatus APM agents for Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, Go and .NET record code-level traces, stack traces and N+1 queries, with continuous profiling for Go, Java and Node.js.

03 — Coverage

Monitor every server, not only Linux nodes

One infrastructure agent covers Linux, Windows and macOS, and uptime checks run from nine global locations, so you see your service the way users in other regions see it.

Atatus is the right choice when you need to

Know when Atatus fits your team better

Six places where Atatus gives your team more than groundcover, with less to run.

Keep observability off your cloud bill

If you'd rather not run and pay for an observability database in your own cloud account, Atatus hosts the whole backend for you.

Find what made a request slow, not just which call

Language agents trace requests through your code, database queries and external calls, so you see what made a request slow, with stack traces for errors.

Monitor more than Kubernetes

Windows and macOS servers, VMs, serverless functions and Kubernetes clusters all report to the same place.

Check uptime from where your users are

HTTP, API, SSL and DNS checks run every minute from nine global locations, outside your own network.

Add security monitoring to the same platform

SIEM with MITRE ATT&CK mapped rules, file integrity monitoring and security audit logs sit next to your APM and logs.

Tune queries with explain plans

Database monitoring for seven engines, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle and MongoDB, with query samples, explain plans and deadlock detection.

Atatus vs groundcover

How Atatus and groundcover compare in the areas teams ask about most. Pick a tab.

Atatus Platform

  • Hosted SaaS: Atatus runs the storage and query backend, with nothing to deploy in your cloud

  • On-premises edition when data must stay on your own servers, including air-gapped networks

  • APM, RUM, session replay, logs, infrastructure, Kubernetes, database and security monitoring in one place

  • Language agents for 7 runtimes, plus OpenTelemetry (OTLP) ingest

  • AI root cause analysis and an MCP server for AI coding assistants

groundcover Platform

  • No fully hosted option: the backend always runs in your cloud account (BYOC) or on your premises

  • Backend compute and storage are billed by your cloud provider, on top of the per-host fee

  • No SIEM or file integrity monitoring

  • Logs, metrics, traces, RUM, synthetics, AI observability and an MCP server

Customers

Powering better performance for modern teams

"Solid Product even better support." The integration path is incredibly simple/easy and the overall interface is very intuitive. That said, I had a handful of odd use cases that the support team was incredibly responsive in helping me work through.

Questions

Questions teams ask before switching from groundcover

Straight answers on cost, setup and coverage.

  • groundcover collects data with an eBPF sensor on Kubernetes and Linux hosts and keeps it in a backend that runs in your own cloud account (BYOC). Atatus is a hosted platform: you install language agents or send OpenTelemetry data, and Atatus stores and queries it for you, with nothing to run in your cloud. groundcover's eBPF sensor needs no code changes, but it sees requests between services rather than what happens inside your code, and it runs only on Linux. Atatus agents give you code-level detail, run on Windows and macOS as well, and come with database and security monitoring.

  • groundcover charges one all-signals price per host, from $30 a month on its Pro plan, and its backend runs in your cloud account, so your cloud provider also bills you for that compute and storage. Atatus is hosted, so there is no cloud bill on top, and you pay only for the products you use: infrastructure monitoring from $15 and APM from $49 per host a month on yearly billing, and logs from $0.75 per ingested GB.

  • If your services already send OpenTelemetry data to groundcover, point the SDKs or Collector at the Atatus OTLP endpoint and keep your instrumentation. If you rely on the eBPF sensor alone, install the Atatus agent for each language you run: Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, Go or .NET.

  • Yes, with the Atatus on-premises edition, which runs inside your own network, including air-gapped environments. The standard Atatus service is hosted SaaS, so there is nothing to run unless you need that.

  • Atatus monitors clusters, nodes, pods and containers, with pod logs, events and deployment health, from $15 per node plus $0.84 per pod a month on yearly billing. Unlike groundcover's sensor, the same Atatus agents also cover the Windows and macOS servers around your clusters.
